Consulting engineer and inventor. Letters concerning his professional work as chairman of the Virginia. Board of Mechanical Survey; consulting work, particularly on heating and generating plants, including the U.Va. heating plant, as the inventor of the Willis planimeter, the Willis navigating machine, and other items, and as author of various articles for engineering and naval publications, and a book, "Methods of modern navigation." Included are many letters of inquiry about products and many orders for equipment needed in his home and laboratory. Personal correspondence to his sons, Francis Thomas Willis and Edward Fauntleroy Willis is included. [10 v. 31 cm. letterpress copies] -- Scrapbook, entitled, "Edward J. Willis, 1895", containing clippings about Willis and articles by him [ca. [50] p. 24 cm.].
